Theology does not simply happen. Theologians engage in their craft by working through a number of specific sources out of which they construct a theology. The number of the sources, the nature of the sources, and how the sources should be used are all disputed. For example, the protest of the Reformation was against Catholic dogma that merged Scripture and tradition together into one authority. The Reformers insisted on the primacy of Scripture in the doctrine of the church.
